Interesting that the academics bring up Massachusetts, saying that Finland and Mass don't emphasize "rote learning" but "cognitive development." In fact, Massachusetts adopted an ED Hirsch-inspired Core Knowledge curriculum, which does strongly emphasize knowing actual things, instead of just learning how to Google. With that curriculum in place, Massachusetts saw great gains in student outcomes.
In other words, no surprise here, the academics are full of it.
